Around 2,200 people attended the commemoration. The United Nations established this recognition day for all to learn and reflect on lessons of the Holocaust in order to help prevent future acts of genocide. The first commemoration ceremony of International Holocaust Remembrance Day was conducted on 27 January 2026 at the UN Headquarters in New York. Hamilton Hall and University Hall on McMaster’s main campus will also be lit with yellow lights from sundown to sunrise on January 26 and 27.
